Bees vs. Wasps: How to Tell What Is on Your Property

You can tell bees from wasps by body and behavior: bees are hairy, rounded pollen-feeders, while wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are smooth, slender predators. The difference matters because honey bees are often relocated, while wasps and hornets are removed.

Body and behavior

Bees are fuzzy and robust, with hair that collects pollen as they move between flowers for nectar. Honey bees are gentle unless the hive is threatened, and bumblebees are large and round. Wasps and hornets, by contrast, are smooth, shiny and narrow-waisted, and they are predators that hunt other insects — which also makes them more aggressive near a nest.

Yellow jackets are small wasps, often nesting in the ground or wall voids and showing up at picnics and trash in late summer. Bald-faced hornets build the large gray "football" nests in trees and on eaves.

  • Bees: hairy, rounded, at flowers, usually calm.
  • Wasps/hornets: smooth, slender, narrow-waisted, predatory.
  • Yellow jackets: small wasps, ground/wall nests, picnic crashers.

Why identification changes the response

Honey bees are valuable pollinators, so a resting swarm or an accessible colony is often relocated rather than exterminated. Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are removed, and their nests are treated at the source with timing and protection that keep people safe.

Getting the ID right avoids needlessly killing honey bees and ensures a wasp nest is handled with the caution it needs.

What about the nest?

The nest is another clue. Honey bees build waxy combs, often hidden in a wall or hollow tree. Paper wasps build small open umbrella nests under eaves. Hornets build large enclosed gray nests. Yellow jackets nest underground or in voids, with a steady stream of insects coming and going from a single entrance.

When to call either way

Regardless of species, a nest near a door, over a walkway, or where someone is allergic is worth professional removal — the risk is the same whether it is wasps or hornets. If you cannot tell what you have, a technician identifies it before acting, relocating honey bees where practical and removing wasps safely.

The takeaway

Hairy and calm at flowers means bees (often relocated); smooth and narrow-waisted means wasps (removed). Unsure or near a door? Call (209) 563-1650.
